Disgusting Stories.jpgThe Philippines industry has performed very well at AdStars this year with TBWA Santiago Mangada Puno and Dentsu Jayme Syfu both among the region’s best performers. Overall Filipino agencies scored 2 Grand Prix, 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 8 Bronzes at the AdStars awards presentation, held on Saturday night at the BEXCO Convention Centre in Busan..

TBWA Santiago Mangada Puno scored 1 Grand Prix, 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes. “Disgusting Stories” for Bahay Tuluyan (Shelter House) was one of the best performers at the show winning their Grand Prix plus 2 Golds, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.

The Bahay Tuluyan (Shelter House) campaign highlights child abuse in the Philippines, sharing actual stories of child abuse through an animated film using actual illustrations by abused children given by sociologist Dr. Elspeth McInnes of University of South Australia.

Within 24 hours of posting, the Bahay Tuluyan video it had been picked up by publications and children’s rights groups all over the world. More publicity came when Facebook banned the video and suspended the uploader’s admin privileges for supposedly violating their community standards. A week later Facebook did an about face and approved the video.

“Disgusting Stories stood out for lots of reasons with the overriding being its capacity to move us to tears. The slow reveal of the children’s animations is simple, engaging and ultimately heartbreaking and the choice of music is outstanding. Powerful stuff told in an understated way,” explains AdStars jury member Judy Hill, Executive Producer at Nexus Studios in London.

Dead Whale_new.jpgDentsu Jayme Syfu were frequent visitors to the stage picking up 1 Grand Prix, 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes all for their highly acclaimed “Dead Whale” for Greenpeace.

The agency mounted an installation of a 73-foot decomposing “Dead Whale” on the shores of one of the most polluted cities in the Philippines during the 2017 ASEAN Summit. The whale was created using plastic wastes collected from the ocean. The campaign results included over 100 million impressions internationally and it caught the attention of ASEAN leaders, which put Coastal and Marine Protection in the proposal for the next Summit.

“We loved the purity of this idea, the effort that’s gone into it, and the fact it achieved so much more than anyone thought it would,” says Toby Talbot, Executive Judge and Chief Creative Officer at Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand. “Only when you got up close could you see that it wasn’t a giant beached whale after all, it was an installation made of plastic, making a direct correlation between pollution and dead fish.”

Publicis JimenezBasic (1 Silver), NuWorks Interactive Labs (1 Silver + 3 Bronze), McCann (1 Bronze) were also winners from The Philippines.
