Artist Nathan Zhuo’s solo exhibition ‘No Bull, No Shit’ opens at Anomaly Shanghai’s cultural event platform

Anomaly Shanghai collaborates with artist Nathan Zhou to present the artist’s solo exhibition “No Bull, No Shit” at Anomaly OPEN, Anomaly’s cultural event platform.

The artistic practice of Nathan Zhou depicts his individual world, where reality and illusion interweave, through intuitive and evocative painting language. Using graffiti and collage as his primary techniques, he infuses his works with the look of a personal diary. Evolving topics, captivating images and narratives combine in the artist’s unique language to create a fulfilling and inspiring tension.

For this exhibition, Nathan Zhou splits the word “bullshit” into two words “bull” and “shit” to transform daily useless nonsense into economically and ecologically useful images. He blends “bull” and “shit” with his childhood memories of the southern lychee forest where he grew up, as well as his various imagined incarnations (gigantic animals, plants, monsters), using paints and recycled materials to create a parodied energy exchange and circulating system in the Anomaly OPEN space.

Nathan Zhou conducted a nearly two-week on-site creation for this exhibition, improvising and interacting with the exhibition space depending on his daily mood. Every surface of the space was his canvas, and every random event inside and outside the space were his source of inspiration. The artist compares his improvisation to child play – “A child can play the same game everyday, but every day the way he plays differs from what he did yesterday.” This innocence and playful spirit challenges our habits of understanding the world around us and stimulates extraordinary creativity.

“We love Nathan’s free-flowing, unbounded style. That’s very close to the soul of Anomaly,” said Elvis Chau, China ECD and Partner at Anomaly, “His work is child-like and true, but at the same time gloriously full and abundant. Being immersed in his work reignites your own passion about the mundane, the anything, and the everyday.”

For the duration of the exhibition, visitors can wander freely in the spectacular space created by Nathan Zhou, appreciate every subtle improvised detail, and interpret the connection between different artistic images in their own way. Anomaly will also host an artist Q&A session at the neighbouring Common cafe, enabling the audience to have a face-to-face exchange with the artist, and a deeper understanding of his artistic creation.

This exhibition continues Anomaly’s ongoing commitment to culture. From The Unreasonable, the content platform Anomaly created in 2013, to Anomaly OPEN, its cultural event platform, Anomaly continues to defy definition and lead the industry forward.
