Day 1 @ Cannes Lions through the CB camera
An easy day to kick off this year’s Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The first Sunday of the Festival is when the crowds start to grow and you can feel the momentum build. The day was spent networking in a very civilised manner. Early on in the week is the best time in Cannes. Later in the week you are running from one meeting/party to another but early on in the week is a great time to catch up with friends.
The highlight of Sunday was hearing about the great performance of Asia at the shortlist stage in the first few categories and also helping to celebrate this with great friends on the Carlton Terrace and at the Gutter Bar. O&M Hong Kong scored 22 shortists on day one – probably the highlight of the day.
Socially, lunch at the Carlton Beach is a must and this was followed by dinner at Pastis, a great local restaurant right in the middle of Cannes. Sunday is also a great time to stroll around Cannes and take in the sights, which included watching Pakistan crush India in the Champions Trophy cricket one day tournament.
Gripe of the day: If you have anything to do with Medialink or Shazam hang your head in shame. Their desecration of the Carlton Hotel represents a lot of what’s wrong with our industry. Who ever thought it was a good idea to stick logos all over the most beautiful building in Cannes should lose their job tomorrow!
