Hyundai’s Nano Cooling Film supports the UN’s commitment to the Global Cooling Pledge
As global temperatures continue to rise, the need for sustainable and efficient cooling solutions has become increasingly urgent. In 2023, the UN launched the Global Cooling Pledge, a commitment to work together to reduce cooling-related emissions across all sectors by at least 68% globally by 2050. The Global Cooling Pledge aims to raise international cooperation, increase access to sustainable cooling, and limit the global average temperature rise to 1.5℃. At the COP28 summit, UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen highlighted the critical demand for better passive cooling methods.
The transport sector alone accounts for around a quarter of global emissions, with vehicle air conditioning responsible for producing 420 million tonnes of CO2 annually. As a leading automotive manufacturer committed to sustainable mobility, Hyundai has developed an innovative solution to tackle this issue: Nano Cooling Film. This transparent passive cooling film is designed to significantly reduce the need for energy-intensive air conditioning in vehicles, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional methods.
The Nano Cooling Film is composed of three specialized layers that utilize advanced nanotechnology and quantum mechanics. The outer and middle layers work to reflect incoming solar heat, while the inner layer absorbs interior heat and emits it externally. This groundbreaking design can lower the temperature inside a vehicle by up to 20℃, drastically reducing the reliance on air conditioning and, consequently, cutting down on CO2 emissions.
Hyundai first introduced the Nano Cooling Film in Lahore, Pakistan—a city known for its extreme heat and pollution. The film was perfect for Pakistan, where traditional darker tinting films are illegal. This not only allows drivers to avoid fines but also provides a much more effective cooling solution. Hyundai applied the film to cars, no matter their make or model, along with a ‘Made Cooler by Hyundai’ sticker inspired by Pakistani art.
Hyundai plans to release the Nano Cooling Film to the public as a standalone product, compatible with any car model. Additionally, it will be offered as an optional feature in future Genesis cars and Hyundai truck models, marking a significant step forward in passive sustainable vehicle technology.
If applied to all cars in Pakistan, the Nano Cooling Film has the potential to save up to 1 million tons of CO2 per year, which is a 7.3% reduction in vehicle carbon emissions. Hyundai hopes to release the Nano Cooling Film across the world, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change while enhancing comfort and efficiency for all drivers.
