Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo creates series of films celebrating the power of creativity with Canva
Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo has expanded on the successful launch of Canva in Japan with a touching new film series that explores the power of creativity to solve everyday problems.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Yuki Tanada, known for her works The One Million Yen Girl and My Broken Mariko, the eight-part series follows Yuki, a precocious young girl, and her fellow islanders on a small, picturesque island somewhere in Japan.
Each short film highlights a relatable, everyday challenge faced by the islanders—problems that are creatively solved through Canva’s intuitive design tools. Whether it’s creating digital artwork, crafting presentations, editing videos, or designing printed materials, the series demonstrates how Canva empowers people to solve problems, big and small, with ease and creativity.
The lead role of Yuki is played by child actor Rana Izutani, celebrated for her performances in popular TV dramas like Umi no Hajimari (The Beginning of the Sea).
The first four films introduce the island’s peaceful atmosphere and its quirky, endearing residents.
In The Postman, Yuki forms an unlikely bond with the island’s postman, played by Kanji Furutachi, breathing new life into the tradition of Nengajo—Japan’s centuries-old custom of sending New Year postcards to loved ones. Through the film, Canva emphasizes how the platform can help people express what’s often left unsaid, offering a modern touch to a beloved cultural tradition.
In A Fresh Start, Yuki wants to help her grandmother, played by beloved actress and former hit singer Naoko Ken, as she struggles to find creative fulfillment at her seemingly stale, island salon.
In Dream Boyfriend, we’re pulled into the world of Yuki’s cool surfer crush, Kai, as Yuki makes some changes to his reality that better suit her childlike dream – having a real-life boyfriend of her own.
In Island Romance, Yuki schemes to make the entire island fall in love, believing it will lead to more kids to play with. Her elaborate plans fill the island with intrigue and a sprinkle of chaos.
Max Pilwat, Creative Director at W+K Tokyo, said:“This year, we explored the power of Canva on a deeper level. Through this series, we brought the app to an unexpected setting—an island—demonstrating how it can allow real people to design and connect beyond their imaginations.”
The series will continue into 2025, with upcoming episodes introducing additional island characters played by a range of familiar faces, creating an ongoing narrative that celebrates creativity, community, and connection.
