Naga DDB Tribal Malaysia brings care and craft back to Raya gifting with “Sampul Dodol”
This Hari Raya, Naga DDB Tribal is reimagining the transactional nature of modern festive gifting with Sampul Dodol, a creative initiative that transforms the conventional duit raya envelope into something far more meaningful: a vessel of collective labour, time and care.
Over the years, Raya gifting has become increasingly convenient, marked by crisp notes tucked into decorative envelopes. Yet, something fundamental has quietly disappeared: the communal traditions that once bound communities together.
Sampul Dodol seeks to reclaim what has been lost. This labour-intensive traditional Raya delicacy has always been more than just food. Instead of designing another festive envelope, the agency transformed the idea of the sampul itself into a vessel of shared labour.
“We sometimes forget the value of simple things, in this case traditional kueh like dodol,” said Nik Radzi, Executive Creative Director of Naga DDB Tribal. “Dodol needs constant care. If you stop caring, it burns. If you stop paying attention, there’s 101 ways it could go wrong. The same goes for our relationships. Through Sampul Dodol, we wanted to remind ourselves and our clients that what we truly owe one another during Raya isn’t just money, it’s care and attention.”
The handcrafted dodol will be shared with Naga DDB Tribal’s clients as a festive gesture, symbolising the agency’s commitment to nurturing relationships with the same patience and care required to make the traditional delicacy.
With Sampul Dodol, Naga DDB Tribal hopes to spark a simple reflection of this Raya: that while convenience may shape modern traditions, the spirit of togetherness is something worth stirring back to life.
Because sometimes, the most meaningful gifts are the ones we take the time to make together.
