Comedy directing duo MAMA joins The Sweetshop for representation in Asia, UK, Europe, Aust + NZ

The Sweetshop has announced the signing of comedy directing duo MAMA for representation in Australia, UK, Europe, New Zealand, and Asia. Known for crafting wildly absurd, beautifully cinematic worlds filled with talking dogs, rogue coffee machines, and practical effects that defy logic (and sometimes physics), MAMA have established themselves as the hottest new comedy directors in their native USA.

MAMA, aka Mark Potoka and Matt Starr Spicer, cut their teeth writing the ads they dreamt of making by day, while by moonlight they were shooting low-fi, spit-out-your-coffee-funny spec ads. That DIY hustle shaped the directors they are today—obsessive about craft, fearless with comedy, and endlessly inventive when it comes to making dumb things look beautiful.

Says Edward Pontifex, co-Managing Director of The Sweetshop Australia:  “MAMA are masters of blending the absurd with the cinematic, turning even the most ridiculous ideas into comedy gold. Their fearless approach to comedy and commitment to craft make them a perfect fit for The Sweetshop.”

These two aren’t just directors, they’re engineers of chaos, honing their style of practical effects, surreal scenarios, and razor-sharp comedy for Geico, McCain, Monster, Extra Gum, and assorted spicy foodstuffs.

Says Greg Fyson, Global Head of Director Development at The Sweetshop:  “Sweetshop is very excited to have Mark and Matt join.  We like the same things, laugh at the same things, and now, we’ll make great things. Welcome to the team, gents!”

On joining The Sweetshop, MAMA says: “We kicked off our career with practical effects and cinematic dumb-funny comedy and never looked back. Signing with The Sweetshop is an exciting next step, and we can’t wait to wreak some beautifully crafted havoc in new markets.”

For those who crave boundary-pushing, laugh-out-loud filmmaking with a distinctly absurd edge—MAMA has arrived. Buckle up.
