Muma Malaysia and CzipLee turn erasers into art tools with ‘The Art of Undoing’
Muma Malaysia turns the tables on traditional art-making with The Art of Undoing, a unique project that proves erasing can be just as creative as drawing itself.
The Art of Undoing marks Muma’s latest experimental art installation, created in collaboration with stationery retailer CzipLee. The project celebrates creativity through precision erasing and invites audiences to rethink traditional artistic tools and processes.
Two large monochromatic art pieces were created in a “reverse drawing” process where canvas was filled in with graphite before the creative team meticulously worked with MONO Zero high precision erasers. Each deliberate stroke of erasing on the blackened surface revealed intricate details, textures, and forms – transforming subtraction into a stunning act of creation.
The resulting artworks, rich in contrast and depth, feature surrealistic themes envisioned by Muma’s design team led by creative partner Choo Chee Wee.
“Throughout centuries, everyone associates the pencil as a tool for master artists and look at erasers as instruments for correcting,” said Choo. “We wanted to reverse that mindset and show that creation can be as much about removal as addition. By combining creative foresight with craftsmanship, we hope to convey that precision erasing is an art form on its own.”
The Art of Undoing works received peer recognition for its craft and design at the prestigious Kancil Awards 2025 held recently, securing two Silver, four Bronze and two Merit awards.
The painstaking project took two months to complete and is on display at CzipLee in Bangsar Village, a long-standing haven for art lovers of all ages. The collaboration was a natural fit for both Muma and Malaysia’s specialist stationery company, who share a passion for encouraging creativity beyond convention.
Guided by its mission to unlock a world where creativity knows no bounds, CzipLee champions the importance of cultivating imagination in everyday life. CzipLee Executive Director, Jason Chen, said: ‘This collaboration embodies CzipLee’s commitment to unlocking a world where creativity knows no bounds. These elaborate works remind us that erasing is not just about correcting but an integral part of creating and an art form in its own right. We hope that the displays will inspire our customers to explore new ways of expressing their creativity, and not be confined to conventional ideas and methods.”
