Fortuna Indonesia and Hope for Strays launch Pawtective Siren to protect stray dogs

Stray dog abuse in Indonesia is shockingly frequent, yet most cases go unseen. As reported by local media, a stray dog was found critically injured and later died after allegedly being burned alive by a man in Jakarta. Tragically, countless helpless dogs tremble in fear as abusers strike on quiet streets at night, their cries fading before help can arrive. Seeing lives at risk and shelters overcrowded, Hope for Strays and Fortuna Indonesia stepped in to introduce Project Pawtective Siren, a solution that offers a new kind of protection.

Just like humans, studies show that a dog’s heart rate stays steady when they are calm, but spikes when they feel panic, fear, or fright. By tweaking pet smart health- collar technology, we programmed the heart-rate sensor to integrate a siren and LED light. When the dog’s rapid heartbeat spikes, the sensor triggers the siren and flashing LED, scaring abusers and alerting the public, then shuts off once the heart rate normalises.

More than 20 dogs were fitted with the Pawtective Siren and tested in a controlled environment to ensure real-world accuracy. Next, 500 devices were fitted on stray dogs across Jakarta, protecting them from abusers and sounding the alarm for stray dog protection among Indonesians. Each device is equipped with a GPS tracker, ensuring easy upkeep, including battery replacement.

Project Pawtective Siren is now reaching more cities across Indonesia, supported by active efforts to raise funds, recruit volunteers, and drive its next phase of growth. These actions help ensure the project remains sustainable and purpose-driven, protecting even more stray dogs nationwide.
