Twelve Grand LIAs awarded in 2018: Host/Havas Sydney and Barking Owl LA pick up two each
The 33rd Annual London International Awards saw a total of 12 Grand LIAs (best of year awards) handed out.
The judging convened over a 10-day period in Las Vegas at the beginning of October. The Juries, drawn from the world’s most recognized talent and presided over by industry leaders, viewed and scored every entry within their medium, ensuring that all the work was judged equally.
This year, twelve Grand LIAs were awarded including two to Host/Havas Sydney “Palau Pledge” and Barking Owl Los Angeles for Montefiore Medical Center titled “Corazón”:
PRODUCTION &
POST PRODUCTION GRAND LIA
ANORAK Film, Berlin
ANORAK Film, Berlin was awarded the Production & Post-Production Grand LIA for BMW Group MINI Brand Management titled “The Faith of a Few”
In 1964, at the start of the famous Rallye Monte Carlo, almost everyone doubted the MINI. But John Cooper’s unwavering faith in the tiny but maneuverable MINI, fitted with a bigger engine, silenced the embittered symphony of naysayers. We painstakingly recreated the race and wove together comments of the time like “sweet little tin can” and “big dreams with small chances” into an intricate tension-filled soundtrack promptly silenced as the MINI John Cooper Works crosses the finish line. The film was entirely shot on location in Monte Carlo, using cars, cameras and even billboards from that time.
PRINT GRAND LIA
Area 23, An FCB Health Network Company, New York was awarded the Print Grand LIA for Change the Ref titled “Posts Into Letters”.
The U.S. has more mass shootings than any country. After each tragedy, Americans take over social media to voice their concerns and vent their frustrations. Though 93% of the public believes something must change, few actually write directly to their representatives to ask for change – which 96% of Congress staffers reported to be the most powerful way to influence policy. Our goal was to help Change the Ref–a non-profit founded by Manuel Oliver, father of a school shooting victim–to affect real change. Online posts don’t influence policy change. Handwritten letters do. So, we created a web platform that turns ineffective gun control-related social media posts into handwritten letters to Congress by using the handwriting of Joaquin Oliver, a child killed at the Parkland, FL, shooting.
BRANDED ENTERTAINMENT GRAND LIA
Barking Owl Los Angeles
Barking Owl, Los Angeles was awarded the Branded Entertainment Grand LIA for Montefiore Medical Center titled “Corazón”.
This piece was created to raise awareness of the hospital, Montefiore, as well as the importance of organ donation. Montefiore hospital gives assistance to people in third world countries who need it. Many people are waiting for organs and it’s so easy to donate. They wanted to create a piece of work that was powerful and would resonate with the audience in a way that a :60 piece could not. The piece was done in 3 weeks in its entirety. From the musical score, dialogue editing, foley, sound design, loop groups and mixing, we finished all audio in house.
INTEGRATION GRAND LIA
BBDO New York
BBDO New York, was awarded the Integration Grand LIA for P&G / My Black is Beautiful campaign titled “The Talk”.
The film exposed more Americans than ever to the existence of “The Talk” in black families and engaged the rest of the country in a broader positive conversation about racial bias. The campaign’s impressive social engagement and the conversation around it delivered our objective: to get people of diverse backgrounds to talk openly about racial bias and help reignite P&G’s “My Black is Beautiful” program.
DESIGN GRAND LIA
Host/Havas Sydney
Host/Havas, Sydney was awarded the Design Grand LIA for Palau Pledge .
To curb ecological damage caused by booming tourist numbers, a bold entry visa process was created for Palau. Visitors have a pledge stamped in their passports, which they must sign before an officer. This agreement – dedicated to Palau’s children – is a promise to act in an environmentally responsible way. The stamp is central to the campaign’s identity. Physical stamps of the Pledge, type and educational icons were made. Their imprints were scanned and applied to all executional elements. The logo, inspired by the Palau flag and “sign here” symbol, is incomplete until signed.
DIGITAL GRAND LIA
McCann London
McCann London, was awarded the Digital Grand LIA for Microsoft titled “Xbox Design Lab Originals: The Fanchise Model”.
Xbox Design Lab is a site that lets gamers customise controllers, but at a higher price than normal controllers. How could Xbox take cost out of the equation to increase sales? We reinvented the site itself, to let gamers claim ownership of their design. So now, the more people who buy your design, the more money you earn. It changed the traditional buyer-seller dynamic. With a vested interest, gamers started behaving more like entrepreneurs than consumers, essentially selling our product for us. They spotted gaps in the market, claiming designs that would sell within their communities. Sports teams, flag
s, current events, even charitable causes … if it had a fanbase, someone owned a design around it.
SOCIAL INFLUENCERS GRAND LIA
McCann New York
McCann New York, was awarded the Social Influencers Grand LIA for MGM Resorts International titled “Universal Love Songs”.
We created an album that reimagined classic wedding songs, flipping the pronouns to upend norms and challenge conventional notions of love songs, which have traditionally been written from a heterosexual point of view. Using musicians to create content, we enlisted contributors who have been at the forefront of cultural revolution, like Bob Dylan. With these iconic artists (Dylan, Kesha, Benjamin Gibbard, St. Vincent, Kele Okereke, and Valerie June), who spanned genres, generations and sexual orientations, we recorded new versions of classic love songs.

Legendary beer brand, BECK’S, has become an integral part of youth society in Germany. For over 145 years BECK’S has been brewing a premium beer with carefully selected ingredients and unequaled taste. The beer market has been stagnant over the last few years and canned-beer suffers from a massive image problem. To overcome this challenge and additionally stand out among competitors we tackled it at the most immediate touchpoint – the can itself.
