The Awards night was the culmination of the two-day Kancil Creative Festival, with the theme “Belief Creates”. The Festival showcased passionate personalities from a variety of disciplines, sharing their philosophies on how creativity can be a powerful tool with faith as a driving force, with exhibitions, mini workshops, dialogue sessions, and immersive experiences centred on the idea that conviction can conceive the most amazing things from the human mind.

Festival-goers were treated to a stellar line-up of 13 diverse speakers that included Ronald Rael, creator of the Seesaw Project at the Mexican Border, Fahmi Reza, political graphic designer and visual activist; Eleanor Gorroh, beader and cultural activist; James Whitelow Delano, founder of Everyday Climate Change; Ian Yee, Elroi Yee, and Samantha Chow, investigative journalists at R.AGE; and Jia Ping, Programme Director at Think City.

Organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents of Malaysia (4As), the Kancil Awards 2019 introduced 21 new subcategories added to 10 award categories to recognise the best from Audio to Design, and from Film and Branded Entertainment to Outdoor, with more than 250 awards presented.

“The ever popular Kancil Awards this year received over 900 entries, while the Student Kancils X Scoolers have grown again, receiving 361 entries, an 80% increase over 2018,” said Karthi Palasamy, Organising Chairman of the Kancil Awards 2019. “This year, the judging panel was headed by Emir Shafri, and featured legendary creative icons to form the most diverse jury in the history of the Kancil Awards,” he added.

For the Young Kancils, the team from Publicis Malaysia comprised of Deeban Subramaniam, Brandon Pereira, and Brenda Yew won Gold, while teams from Ogilvy Malaysia and Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur received Bronze awards, and the team from Ensemble Worldwide received a Merit award.

The One Academy was named Creative School of The Year for the Student Kancil x Scoolers Awards, a creative challenge that showcases students’ work against a professional barometer.

“The ad industry’s existence is dependent on being relevant to society, to reflect the change that’s happening and being a part of what matters, by understanding the experience of being human,” said Alvin Teoh, Creative Council Chairman of the 2019 Kancil Awards. “Tonight’s winners understand that people are both diverse and complex, and the best way to engage with them is to understand the multiple ways our species experience meaning – through music, poetry, culture, architecture, stories, pictures, narratives, technology, movements and ultimately, beliefs.”

Andrew Lee, 4As President said, “The awards and the festival are a tangible expression of the best work that we as an industry do day in, day out, an impressive accumulation of creative belief and driven excellence. Furthermore, these elements come together to support one of the objectives of the 4As – to raise standards and professionalism, actively cultivating a creative economy and raising the quality of works in the industry. Serving these objectives, the 4As will continue to steer the industry through the challenges ahead, reaching for sustainable growth and inspiration.”
