As reported last week by Campaign Brief Asia, Grey Malaysia released a new Coway campaign to showcase the brand’s role in transforming lives with the integration of its air and water filtration products into the home. The film was directed by Sling Ng from Directors Think Tank (DTT) Malaysia and here we take a closer look at the production process involved.
The campaign explores the life of a Malaysian free diver who overcomes all limitations and fears to become a renowned figured in the challenging sport.
Directed by Sling Ng, Dreamer in the Deep: A Life Changing Journey uses the protagonist’s relationship with water as a metaphor to show how healthy living, quality drinking water, and clean air are necessities that should be integral parts of our lives. In preparation for the shoot, DTT carried out extensive research to understand the risks associated with free diving and the intensive training that professional athletes undergo. DTT spent a lot of time engaging with an actual team of Malaysia free divers who were also featured as talents in the film.
In addition to finding talents that had both the necessary skillset and the ability to act, selecting the right Director of Photography (DOP) was also essential to the shoot. “We wanted to make sure that the underwater shots were realistic. Luckily we found a DOP that is comfortable being underwater too,” said Producer Tan Shuying.
She continued, “Safety was a priority for us so we did multiple rehearsals in a diving pool to ensure everyone was comfortable with the scenes. We even sent our Director and DOP on a discovery diving course so they were familiar with being underwater.”
All underwater shots were carried out in Redang Island to ensure safe diving conditions and minimal interruptions. On working with the team, DTT’s director Sling Ng commented, “I am incredibly proud of the team that we had working on this project. We truly had the best under water experts. That’s the reason why all the shots feel so natural, realistic, and fluid. Watching everyone push themselves to the personal limits to achieve the cinematic shots you see in the final film is truly priceless.”
This is the seventh brand film that Ng has directed for Coway. Ng’s other collaborations with Coway include 2020’s CNY spot Tiny Prayer, 2019’s Raya film Raikan Kemurnian Hari Raya, a2019’s celebration of Coway being a part of 1 Million Homes, The Waterman, and Water, best purified by The Water Specialist.
