Directors Think Tank and Hakuhodo Malaysia take the new Toyota Yaris and Vios on a Virtual Race in latest campaign

Hakuhodo Malaysia and Directors Think Tank have created the latest spots for Toyota Yaris and Vios.

 

“Vios and Yaris have both made good impressions in Malaysia. We want to continue building the image of Vios and Yaris not only as excellent cars, but also as brands that play a part in today’s young audience’s lifestyle. Data shows that the gaming world is one of the most popular topics on the internet among Malaysian young adults. So, when we planned the film concept together with our clients at Toyota, and also with Think Tank, we tried to go deeper into this trend – telling the story of Vios and Yaris by merging a virtual world with reality. At the same time, we avoided the conventional style of most car brand films” says Nicholas Kosasih, ECD, Hakudodo Malaysia.

Co-directed by Directors Think Tank directors, Kelvin T and Shin Murota, they were keen to elevate the experience of automotive films. Featuring brand ambassadors Janna Nick and Shukri Yahaya, the film was shot on a real location, with striking 3D elements and graphics added to create a futuristic gaming world.

Shin Murota, Co-director, DTT, said: “A lot of planning and discussion with our in house post production team, DTT Post was required before, during, and after the shoot to ensure we got the look and feel right.”

Kelvin T, Co-director, DTT, says: “We knew we would be building a detailed and intricate background full of graphics but we didn’t want the shots to be restricted to static cameras and lock-off shots. So we shot it like a normal commercial. All live action in a live location with tracking vehicles and even FPV drones. At times scary cause we weren’t if we could track some of the shots but the post team delivered”

After two labour intensive months, Zoe & Bruce created our virtual world. VFX compositor Chris Cheng joked, “I don’t think I have ever rotoscoped this many frames for a film in my entire life! But we wanted to knock it out of the park!”
