Thanachart Insurance and YDM Thailand turn invisible road signs into life-saving warnings
Every hour, two people lose their lives on Thailand’s roads, with motorcyclists accounting for approximately 84% of fatalities. Among the country’s most dangerous road behaviours is wrong-way riding – a decision often made to save time, but one that can end in fatal head-on collisions.
While road safety campaigns have long attempted to warn riders of the dangers, Thanachart Insurance and YDM Thailand identified a critical flaw embedded within the road system itself: traffic signs are designed to face the direction of legal travel, meaning the riders travelling the wrong way are often the only ones who never see the warning.
The result is “The Sign You Shouldn’t See”, a road safety intervention that transforms the reverse side of traffic signs into targeted warnings visible only to riders travelling illegally against traffic.
Rather than functioning as a broad public awareness campaign, the work confronts riders at the precise moment of violation.
Implemented along National Highway 202 and surrounding routes in Roi-Et Province – one of northeastern Thailand’s higher-risk corridors for motorcycle accidents and wrong-way riding – the intervention reimagined the back of road signs as funeral wreaths constructed from real motorcycle accident debris, including broken mirrors, bent frames and crash fragments.
In Thai culture, funeral wreaths signify a life already lost, turning the installation from a conventional warning into a direct visual consequence.
Each sign was specifically designed for real road conditions, engineered to remain visible at motorcycle speed, durable in outdoor environments and positioned exclusively for riders approaching from the wrong direction.
If riders are travelling legally, the signs remain invisible.
For Thanachart Insurance, the project reflects a broader approach to prevention alongside protection.
Every wrong-way accident represents more than an insurance claim – it impacts families, communities and society more broadly. As one of Thailand’s leading non-life insurers, the company saw an opportunity to use creativity as a preventative tool, aiming to reduce risk before accidents occur.

The campaign has already delivered measurable impact.
During Songkran 2026, traditionally Thailand’s most dangerous travel period, fatal accidents in Roi-Et Province fell by 50% compared to the previous year.
More than 100,000 people now travel more safely along Highway 202 each day, while local communities have responded positively to the initiative, recognising the signage as a meaningful intervention against wrong-way riding.
Most significantly, the work has extended beyond campaign status, with “The Sign You Shouldn’t See” officially adopted by Suwannaphum Municipality as permanent road safety signage.
“If you are doing the right thing, you will never see this sign,” said Somsak Settho, Mayor of Suwannaphum Municipality, Roi-Et Province.
The intervention has since been documented as a replicable model for other high-risk roads where wrong-way riding remains a persistent contributor to motorcycle fatalities.
While developed in Thailand, the issue extends across Southeast Asia, where motorcycles account for a significant share of road deaths and riders continue to travel against traffic for convenience, often bypassing traditional road communication systems entirely.
Through “The Sign You Shouldn’t See”, Thanachart Insurance and YDM Thailand propose a different role for road signage – not more warnings for everyone, but smarter warnings aimed specifically at the people who need them most.
