STOM Productions creates new campaign for River’s Made for Makers initiative
River has launched a new campaign film as part of its larger Made for Makers initiative, which spotlights solopreneurs in offbeat professions who use the River Indie in their everyday lives.
Created by STOM Productions, the film sits within a broader brand effort that also includes a documentary series and an on-ground event, all centred around makers building their lives and work on their own terms. Rather than approach the film as a conventional product-led piece, the creative direction treated the Indie as a quiet, constant companion within the protagonist’s journey. The focus remained on the maker and the world around them, allowing the vehicle to exist with presence but without overpowering the narrative.
To reflect the offbeat, self-driven nature of the people at the centre of the story, STOM Productions developed a visual treatment that blended the language of theatre and cinema. Directed by Sarah Thomas, the film translated 2D visuals into a fully realised 3D world, with the lighting designed to behave as it would on stage. Every frame was built to guide the eye with deliberate composition, depth and movement. By stripping back visual excess and allowing the world to recede, the storytelling places the protagonist firmly at the centre, mirroring the solitary, self-driven journeys of the individuals being represented. The River Indie stands as a silent companion- present, constant, and unobtrusive within the protagonist’s journey.
“For me the visual language came from theatre as much as cinema. I wanted both the world of the film and our own making process to become a metaphor for the maker’s tactile process, expressed not just through narrative but through form,” said Sarah Thomas, Director & Founder of STOM Productions.
Almost everything seen on screen was created physically on set. Oversized practical elements, lighting design and set builds formed the core of the world, while CG and AI was used only to enhance and extend what had already been built, or to solve for elements that could not be achieved live.
Producer at STOM Productions, Mahesh Karunakara, added: “The brief gave us a strong thematic direction, but the opportunity was in how we chose to tell it. We wanted the form to echo the spirit of the subjects. Being unconventional, intentional, and stripped down to what truly matters.”
The campaign reflects a balance of conceptual clarity and technical precision, bringing together storytelling, design and execution in equal measure. With this film, River’s Made for Makers initiative expands beyond communication into a more authored brand universe, one that celebrates not just what makers do, but the worlds they inhabit while doing it.
