Bestads Best TV of the Week: Optus’ ‘There’s always a way’ via Droga5 ANZ

Each week Bestadsontv.com [the global arm of Campaign Brief] showcases standout global advertising work as reviewed by a top international creative director or team. This week’s best film is Optus’ ‘There’s always a way’ via Droga5 ANZ, part of Accenture Song.

The film was selected by this week’s guest judge Thasorn “Pete” Boonyanate, Chief Creative Officer at Ogilvy Thailand.

Says Pete: “I’m always a fan of Aussie ads. And Nonnas in ads. So when the story is about a coach dropping out before the semi-final, and Nonna taking over the job, I’m already in.

“She has no idea how to be a coach, but with a little help from Optus mobile internet, she finds her way.

“I love the storytelling and the quirkiness throughout the whole story, all the way to the twist ending. (I’ve already spoiled way too much).

“The way we make commercials is changing. Think consumer. Think about what consumers actually want to watch. And this ad shows exactly that.

“P.S. When I looked at the credits, I had no doubt – Steve Ayson is the director! Holy moly! Could you direct one of my ads, please?!”

Optus has launched ‘There’s always a way’, its new brand platform from Droga5 ANZ, part of Accenture Song, inspired by the resilience, positivity and can-do spirit Australians show every day.

Directed by Steve Ayson, the launch film tells the story of an Italian Nonna who is thrust into coaching her grandson’s basketball team after the regular coach drops out before a semi-final. Despite having little basketball knowledge and standing barely five feet tall, Nonna Maria uses the Optus network to learn, adapt and find a way.

The film marks the beginning of a long-term brand platform that celebrates the positivity and resourcefulness Australians show every day, and the role Optus plays in helping people stay connected to the people, information and support that matter most.
