Cathay takes Hong Kong on an eight-minute journey through 80 years
To celebrate its 80th anniversary, Cathay has teamed up with Leo Hong Kong to bring eight decades of shared journeys to life through an eight-minute dance spectacle inspired by the theme ‘80 Years Together’. The performance brings together 80 Cathay uniformed staff, the Hong Kong Dance Company and renowned Artistic Director Yang Yuntao, with music by acclaimed composer Patrick Lui, as a gift to Hong Kong.
Cathay sought to make a meaningful cultural contribution to the city that has shaped the airline for 80 years. The performance uses dance as a universal language to express connection, progress and shared experiences across generations.
At the heart of the creative concept is the idea of celebrating shared movement between Cathay, Hong Kong and the world. The performance was conceived as an artistic expression of the journeys, relationships and cultural connections that Cathay has shared with its passengers over the past eight decades. Movement becomes a way to express progress, possibility and connection, while the choreography reflects the energy and rhythm of a city that is constantly evolving.
Edward Bell, General Manager, Brand, Insights and Marketing Communications said, “Our 80th anniversary is a celebration of the journeys we have shared with our customers, our communities and Hong Kong. This performance brings that story to life in a way that is energetic, emotional and distinctly Hong Kong. It reflects where we have come from, where we are today and the future we are moving towards together.”
Set against the backdrop of Hong Kong International Airport and Taikoo Place, the 8-minute epic performance takes audiences on a journey through the past, present and future. It celebrates the many eras of Cathay’s history through a striking showcase of iconic cabin crew uniforms, each representing a different chapter in the brand’s story.
It also pays tribute to the city’s global cultural influence, including the legacy of Hong Kong icon Bruce Lee, whose philosophy, artistry, and martial arts continue to inspire audiences worldwide. To showcase this, Cathay and Hong Kong Dance Company adapted the performance from “Kung Fu Artistry,” a powerful dance drama inspired by Bruce Lee’s influence. Through dynamic choreography and expressive movement, the piece reflects the energy, discipline and creativity that have helped Hong Kong make its mark on the global stage.
The dance also expresses the values that Cathay holds most dear: dedication to service, attention to detail and the human connection at the heart of every journey with a powerful vision of tomorrow. Child dancers dressed as Cathay cabin crew and pilots also took to the stage, symbolising the next generation and the future of aviation.
Christopher Lee, Chief Creative Officer of Publicis Groupe Hong Kong, added: “Dance allows us to communicate across languages and generations. By bringing together professional dancers, Cathay crew members and young performers, this production creates a living portrait of Hong Kong, its history, its people, its global connections and its hopes for the future.”
More than an anniversary campaign, the collaboration was also intended as a tribute to Hong Kong and the people who have been part of Cathay’s journey over the past 80 years, including the colleagues who have brought its spirit to life and the shared moments that have connected Hong Kong with the world for 80 years.
